H. R. McEniryJohn JellicoeBorders from the Brevario Grimani - Twelve Parables of Our Lord Illustrated and Illuminated - 1870

1 EUR

A very RARE and beautiful book published by Macmillan in 1870. Illustrated and Illuminated with 12 outstanding full page chromolithographs after sketches by H. R. McEniry, the frontispiece is from a picture by John Jellicoe, the illuminated borders are from the Brevario Grimani, in St. Mark's Library, Venice. Each plate with the associated parable on opposing page printed in color and gold, superb reporductions of hand illumination. The title page like-wise illuminated, the parables and title page designed by Lewis Hind and are as near to hand-illumination as is possible with commercial printing. Each chromolithograph is inset into thick card stock, the cut-out edges surrounding the plates with beveled edges. This is a truly outstanding example of early British colour printing, each color printed from a seperate stone (or zinc plate), and very likely with some of the coloring entered by hand from stencils. Book in fair to good condition. Externally some wear around edges and corners-see photos. Some stains on boards. Gilt still bright. Internally light foxing through the book, illustrations in good condition. Some pages with signs of ancient water damage on a margin. Binding a little shaky. Rarity. Chiudi
