ANTIQUE BOOK WITH ORIGINAL BINDING AND BLIND STAMPED PIGSKIN OVER DECORATED WOODEN BOARDS AND INTACT CLASPS. The 795-page book was printed in Linz, Austria in 1733 and develops a theological controversy on the interpretation of the gospels and religious life between the Austrian Catholic and German Protestant Catholic clergy and was written by Johann Ferdinand Gessl (1682-1764) an Austrian Cristian Catholic priest with supervision and dedication to Josepho Dominico or Joseph Dominikus Graf von Lamberg (1680-1761) prince-bishop in the diocese of Passau and cardinal from the noble Lamberg family, in Styria, Upper Austria. The cardinal Dominikus Graf von Lamberg was primarily concerned with the expansion of the German school system and undertook around a hundred visitation trips, reformed the ecclesiastical disciplined fomenting good customs among the clergy. Description: 4to size H 214 x W 182 mm or 8.5 by 7.2 inches. Title in red-black, 12 sheets for introduction, register and dedication, 795 pages plus 19 sheets for errata and index. Full leather binding, contemporary blind stamped pigskin binding over decorated wooden boards, spine with raised bands, clasps intact and in perfect working order. Few smears, stains and signs of wear on the corners, edges and binding dishes. Pages partly slightly browned, with a few spots scattered here and there. Overall in good condition.

Authors: Johann Ferdinand Gessl (1682-1764) was a Catholic priest at St. Georgen near Tollet, in the Grieskirchen district, Upper Austria. Joseph Dominikus Graf von Lamberg (1680-1761) was prince-bishop in the diocese of Passau and cardinal from the noble Lamberg family, in Styria, Upper Austria. He was the son of Franz Joseph von Lamberg and nephew of Cardinal Johann Philipp von Lamberg. He completed his studies in Besançon in France and in Siena, finishing them in 1694 at the Collegio Clementino in Rome. In 1723 he became the 68th Bishop of Passau. During his long tenure as Bishop of Passau, many churches and monasteries were rebuilt or redesigned in the late Baroque or Rococo>
