RARE BEAUTIFUL FIRST EDITION by Johann Heinrich SULZER (1735-1814) of "HISTORY OF INSECTS" on hundreds of insect species. The ATLAS is complete with 32 numbered, hand-coloured illustrations with great detail and beautiful colours. There are no copies for sale on the market, only one future auction in 16 April with a starting base of 2000 euros. The atlas deals with hundreds of species such as butterflies, moths, beetles, bugs, bees, wasps, dragonflies, flies, spiders, grasshoppers, scorpions, arthropods. All orders/families of insects are represented (Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, Hemiptera, Diptera, Hymenoptera, Acrididae etc...), furthermore crustaceans such as crabs, shrimps, prawns are also illustrated. Engravings are by SULZER and Johann Rudolph Schellenberg (1740-1806), a Swiss artist, writer and entomologist best known for his illustrations of insects. During his career he performed illustrative work for Johann Heinrich SULZER, Johannes Gessner, Johann Kaspar Lavater and Johann Kaspar Füssli. The municipal library in Winterthur has about 4000 of his insect watercolors.

The work "Abgekürtze Geschichte der Insecten nach dern Linaeischen System" or Abbreviated History Of Insects According To The Linnaean System, was published in 1776 by Dr. SULZER and printed by H. Steiner in Winterthur (Switzerland). Dr. SULZER was a Swiss physician and entomologist and for this book he had the collaboration/supervision of Carl LINNAEUS (1707-1778), a Swedish biologist and physician who formalized binomial nomenclature, the modern system of naming organisms. This first and only edition was printed in 2 volumes, one for the text and one dedicated to the 32 illustrations. Only the complete atlas with all hand-coloured and numbered illustrations is offered here.

Description: In 4to size H 255 x W 213 mm or 10.1 by 8.4 inches. Atlas fully illustrated, with 32 beautiful hand-coloured plates-leaves by J. R. Schellenberg. Half corner binding, in burlap. 20th century binding in very good condition, with gilt titles on the spine. Each illustration is numbered, printed on a separate sheet on thick, quality laid paper, few stains and foxing scattered here and there, illustrations intact (NO cuts or holes), all in good condition. Complete atlas.
