La versione AI-S è stata prodotta dalla fine del 1981 a tutto il 1999, con numeri seriali compresi tra 210001 e 238835.
Lo schema ottico e qualità costruttiva del barilotto offre un diaframma composto da 9 lamelle contro le 7 della versione AI, un diaframma che si spinge fino a f/32 (solo f/22 nel modello AI) e soprattutto un collare per il treppiede molto più massiccio e ben dimensionato, che rende la versione AI-S una vera roccia quando viene collegata a un treppiede adeguato.
